How this calculator works

We use the MET method, the standard way researchers estimate the energy cost of an activity. A MET value compares an activity with sitting still, so 6.8 METs means roughly 6.8 times your resting energy use. The calculation is:

Calories = MET x body weight in kg x time in hours

The MET values come from the 2024 Adult Compendium of Physical Activities:

Effort Talk test MET Compendium activity
Easy You can chat freely 4.5 Stair climbing, slow pace (code 17133)
Steady You can talk in short sentences 6.8 Stair climbing, general (code 17131)
Hard Only a few words at a time 9.3 Stair climbing, fast pace, one step at a time (code 17134)

Worked example

A 160 lb person (72.6 kg) steps for 30 minutes at a steady effort: 6.8 x 72.6 x 0.5 = 247 calories. The calculator shows this as "about 245 kcal" and gives the easy to hard range for the same time, here about 165 to 335 kcal.

Why it is an estimate

  • No MET value has been published for mini steppers specifically, so we use the closest published activity, stair climbing. A mini stepper's shorter step and your pace, step depth and resistance setting can all make your real number different.
  • MET estimates include the energy your body uses at rest, so they are a total, not just the extra burned by exercise.
  • The calorie count on your stepper's monitor is its own estimate. Use either number as a rough guide and focus on how consistently you train.

Turn the number into a habit

The free 30-Day Stepper Starter Kit gives you a printable calendar with 10, 15 and 20 minute sessions, a step and time log, optional moves with the stepper's resistance bands, a missed-day reset and a weekly check-in. It works even before you own a stepper, with a marching-in-place preview.

Mini stepper calorie questions

How many calories does a mini stepper burn in 30 minutes?

It depends on your weight and effort. For a 160 lb person, our estimate for 30 minutes is about 165 kcal at an easy effort, 245 kcal at a steady effort and 335 kcal at a hard effort. Enter your own numbers above for a personal estimate.

Is the calorie number on the stepper's monitor accurate?

Treat it as an estimate. Monitors do not know your weight or effort the way a lab test would. It is most useful for comparing your own sessions over time.

How long should a mini stepper session be?

Short, regular sessions are easier to stick with. The starter kit begins with 10 minute sessions and builds to 20 minutes over four weeks, with rest days built in.

Can I use a mini stepper at my desk?

Many people do short sessions next to or under a standing desk. See our guide to mini stepper workouts at work for ideas.
